As many of us had expected, it looks like Android 2.3 will be Gingerbread instead of the Android 3.0 that was previously going around. While the firmware number 3.0 and 2.5 were loosely tossed around, we’re glad that Google is keeping it simple with 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 and now a pretty definitive sign that 2.3 will soon follow.
The Googler also pegs Android 2.3 as a “major release” which could be highlighting the visual UI overhaul. With talk of Gingerbread followed by Honeycomb and now the next treat codenamed Ice Cream coming to light, it looks like the Android community’s future will stay bright for a long while.
