HTC confirms Gingerbread will come, eventually

HTC has always been fairly reliable about getting updates out for their devices. Now what the carriers do with that update is another story. Here is what HTC had to say that leaves us all wondering as usual.

“We are excited about the OS update coming for Android, and while HTC will definitely have some phones running this OS, we do not have a specific timeframe for new phones or updates at this time. Please stay tuned for more details.”

One would think that an update like Gingerbread 2.3 should find its way into manufacturer hands fairly quickly. The complication I always run into is what they do with it. I don’t see HTC, or any other manufacturer for that matter, really pushing to get updates out for a while. Past experience leads me to believe an actual update won’t happen till they have at least launched 1 if not 2 new devices running the software first. Look at Samsung for instance, Google Nexus S is essentially just a modified Samsung Galaxy S. They are now operating on Gingerbread yet we still don’t have Froyo 2.2 yet. If and when that update rolls out no one will be happy now knowing that the device should run Gingerbread.

We also know that Gingerbread has the same requirements as Froyo. That leaves its application to many devices available. There is no reason that any device running Froyo, or should be running Froyo, shouldn’t be on the immediate update list.

Only time will tell. I sure hope these manufacturers and carriers can move forward and support what is out now instead of making customers rely on modifications and custom ROMs.
