The title almost sounds silly really, since there is already an Instagram app for Android. The reality is many current apps offer beta testing versions that will bring new features, designs and refreshes to the main stream app with the help of users. Rather than push an update that they “think” is good and works well, they can fine tune issues from a larger pool of users on a variety of devices. Dropbox has been doing it for quite some time, so has Plex with the Plex Pass app (sort of). If you are a heavy Instagram user, now is your chance to get in on the bleeding edge of what the app and service is doing before the general public gets to.
Beta’s aren’t for the casual user though as there are times where annoying bugs or issues might plague the app or your device. For instance, something in the app keeping your device awake and killing your battery, or it force closing on you when you try to make a post after using a certain filter. Betas are fun though and do give you a leg up on your friends. Getting involved is pretty straight forward and doesn’t force you to meet any special requirements, other than use Instagram and be willing to provide feedback, report issues and let them collect data on its usage.
If you are able and willing, then the first step will be to head over to the Instagram for Android Beta Testers Google Group page. Â Follow the simple instructions to become a tester and get the latest unpublished build of the app. Enjoy!
NOTE: The beta app will replace your current installed version of Instagram.
