It just hasn’t been Qualcomm‘s year has it? I am sure the situations arose in the end of last year, but still. It would seem that Samsung isn’t the only manufacturer looking to go in-house with their own processor in the very near future. Those out of the loop might be unaware that Samsung has apparently dropped Qualcomm and the Snapdragon 810 processor in favor of their own Exynos 7420. They claimed it overheated. LG also agreed that it over heated on the first batch run, but the issue was rectified on a later batch. Now there is word that LG will be looking to bring their own in-house chip out to the lime light.
The chip is being reported as a ARMv8 based with four Cortex-A72 and four Cortex -A5. LG isn’t new to the processor game, they do have a line called the NUCLUN that found its way into a few handsets last year, namely the LG G3 Screen that was announced in October of last year.
“NUCLUN opens up a new chapter in LG’s history of innovation in the mobile industry,†said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics MobileCommunications Company. “With this in-house solution, we will be able to achieve better vertical integration and further diversity our product strategy against stronger competition. NUCLUN will give us greater flexibility in our mobile strategy going forward.â€
The spec’s sounded good at the time, but it too suffered from overheating issues. According to Phone Arena, the line won’t carry the NUCLUN name though. Probably a good idea if the last line suffered from issues. We won’t be seeing any drastic changes to the upcoming LG G Flex 2, nor should we see it land on the LG G4. The LG processor is said to be making its first available appearance by the end of 2015. It is possible a few off shoot devices in over seas areas will come out to give the chip a sort of test market approach, but don’t expect it to make its way stateside until next year at best.
