Logitech Revue Making Google TV Even More Affordable, Not by Choice Though

When I first saw the Logitech Revue box I was extremely excited. Like many others out there, I thought this was going to be absolutely amazing. The next big thing in Google and Android. Boy was I wrong. Even though the unit is extremely nice to have around, it only has minimal functionality without access to the Android Market and a very minimal UI. That will all change relatively soon though. With Android 3.1 Honeycomb said to be out before summers end. That update should give us a more ‘tablet’ experience on our big screens. It will also include the access to the Android market and allow us to install apps and games. How well that goes will be dependent on the developers using the Google remote app on our devices and/or the Keyboard.

When the device launched with a price tag of $300 bucks I thought that was fair, until I got my sample unit. After launch it saw mediocre sales and sort of flat lined. In all actuality, Logitech was losing money on the venture and blames the lack of profits in Q2 due to the lack of Revue sales. They dropped the price which helped some but not much. It is still losing money. With more similar devices with better specs and more capabilities aimed for this years holiday season, Logitech needed to do something to get these units sold. That is exactly what they are doing. Very shortly you should see the Revue boxes available at BestBuy for a mere $99. That is an excellent price for the functionality it provides currently.

Not having an Internet TV, I solely use mine for Netflix and YouTube. I even canceled my Dish Network to save some money.  If you have been waiting to pick one up but couldn’t justify the price tag it was sporting, just wait a little bit longer. When Honeycomb 3.1 drops to this device it will help breathe new life into it as well as make it one of the best priced devices to get some Android love in your home.
