With the launch of the Droid X coming on July 15th, I’m glad that Motorola has made this statement before you went out and bought one if you wanted to crack it. The same bootloader found inside the Motorola Milestone is in the Droid X, to put that in better perspective, the Milestone has yet to be cracked. This causes a lot of problems if you had plans of running custom ROM’s on your Droid X.
“We understand there is a community of developers interested in going beyond Android application development and experimenting with Android system development and re-flashing phones. For these developers, we highly recommend obtaining either a Google ADP1 developer phone or aNexus One, both of which are intended for these purposes.
At this time, Motorola Android-based handsets are intended for use by consumers and Android application developers, and we have currently chosen not to go into the business of providing fully unlocked developer phones.”
Not everyone who flashes custom ROM’s are developers, there is a whole community of users who mod and flash custom ROM’s and donate to their developers. Motorola should be reminded that Android is open-source and if users are paying top dollar for these top devices, they should be allowed to do what they wish. So, if you would like to customize your device, do not buy Motorola.
