Oh snap: Motorola chief suggests Samsung, like Nokia and Blackberry, will fade away in the future

In case you haven’t heard, Motorola has had a great quarter. While it hasn’t yet translated to profit for its now-parent company Lenovo, it’s innovation and growth is almost back to Motorola’s heyday, and people are starting to take notice. But with the rise of multiple manufacturers, including Motorola, there has to be someone who loses out, and Motorola COO, Rick Osterloh, suggests this could be Samsung in the very near future.

“Every seven years, the person who’s been on top of the market has gone away. Nokia lost the top spot first, then Blackberry. Samsung could be next,” says Osterloh

Motorola has loftier aspirations, however, with the Moto X, Moto X Pro, Moto G and several other devices launching in China next week, and the stakes are much higher in the world’s biggest smartphone market as everybody is competing in the premium-quality, medium-cost space that Motorola has enjoyed in Western markets. However, Motorola has one ace up its sleeve, which is its access to Lenovo’s distribution network, which should help greatly in its first stab in the Chinese market after a few year’s absence. Osterloh of course remains confident:

“We are going through one of those fascinating shifts where people are starting to realize that you don’t need to pay $600 for a top-tier phone to get a top-tier experience. We are an alternative to other premium brands at a much better value. We are very confident in our approach.”
