[Off Topic] Xbox 360 and Windows 7 ordered to be removed in Germany due to Motorola patent Disputes

Ha, well here is one I didn’t see coming. According to a report form Reuters, a judge in Mannheim ruled against Microsoft in the on going patent disputes with Motorola Mobility. The judge ordered Microsoft to remove its Xbox 360 and Windows 7 products from German retailers. This isn’t going to stop Microsoft from selling their products though. They claim Motorola is unable to enforce the courts ruling due to a prior ruling granting them a preliminary injunction in a US court.

The whole thing is based primarily on the video-compression software covered in Motorola’s patents that are used in the Xbox and in Windows 7. Last week the ITC also ruled the Microsoft infringed on a number of Motorola patents pertaining to video-compression and wireless technology as well. It doesn’t stop there though, the EU has also started investigations on Motorola and how much they are charging competitors for licenses to their software.

What makes the whole thing a little funnier is that Microsoft was already prepared to lose the battle today. They started moving “its regional software distribution centre to the Netherlands from Germany in anticipation.”
