After the recent news came to light about the iPhone 4 tracking their owners every move, XDA developer mopodo decided to write a lightweight app to see just what his android phone was hiding from him.
After learning about the app, Location Cache Map, on XDA I decided to take a quick look myself. The app requires root access, but having already broken through that barrier I installed it. Mopodo’s app reads the file that is written to by the phones LocationProvider and gives a list of the data, displaying the lat, long, accuracy and time of recording. Mopodo has also coded a map that is populated with all of the locations discovered.
Upon opening the app and reading through the data I was confronted with a dot to dot of my last couple of days showing 78 WiFi entries and 50 cell towers that I had connected too, and that was without me even intentionally connecting to any WiFi networks recently; all because I had allowed my phone to “Use wireless networks”.
The app also allows you to delete and block the phones ability to write to the file, preventing the storing of your location, but still allowing your phone to use your location for other apps.
The app is available from the Android Market and it also has a thread at XDA detailing its changelog at Xda-forum.
