Republic Wireless is making a wireless industry first move today that should shake up the pre-paid sector of things a bit. They are launching a new set of beta plans that will pay back Republic Labs participants for their unused data.
“One of the coolest things here at Republic is collaborating together with our Customers to solve the biggest industry pain points in Republic Labs. It helps us keep one step ahead. Customers told us they wanted control over how much cellular data they buy – with today’s announcement, we are delivering,†Bandwidth and Republic Wireless CEO, David Morken said. “Over eighty percent of our customers use less than a gigabyte of cellular data a month. It’s been estimated that current industry plans cause consumers to waste an average of $200 per year in unused cellular data. We think that’s ridiculous. So we’ve devised a way to pay customers back penny for penny for unused cellular data every month.â€
If you are unfamiliar with Republic Wireless, they are a MVNO that primarily bases its connection on Wi-Fi for calls, texts and data. If Wi-Fi is not accessible, then the device will utilize Sprint for coverage. RW offers a number of Motorola devices that are custom installed with all the necessary software for things to go smoothly.
Their press release regarding the beta plans also states that they are working to offer a second carrier partner option. This would give RW a leg up if Sprint offers sub-par coverage for current or would be consumers of the provider.
