Review: Cellink U Multi-Function Power and Media Syncing Device

We have some great relationships with technology companies who are always sending through cool products for us to check out.  Sometimes It’s hard to determine which ones to get them to send and which ones look like they won’t be of interest to our readers.

This latest gadget from USB Cell Drive was one of those devices that at first glance I almost didn’t have a sample sent through.  The device is called the Cellink U and I’m glad I had this one sent.

Described as the swiss army knife for your cell phone, the Cellink U is a tiny device with big functionality.  I was pleasantly surprised at how convenient this little device could be.  I have lots of other devices that do part of what this device does, but having everything in one tiny little box like this is a great bonus.

I’m telling you how great the Cellink U is, so I’m sure you’d really like to know what it is and what it does!?

Well, the Cellink U acts as four devices in one.

  • Battery Backup.
  • USB Phone Charger.
  • USB Phone Data Connector.
  • micro SD/SDHC Card Reader.
Celllink U Overview

The Cellink U is a 600 mAh rechargeable back up battery that restores and extends the battery life of your mobile devices.  Plug your phone into one side while plugging the other side in your computers USB port and you have USB Charging capabilities. The Cellink U provides 500mA at 5 volts. Not only acting as a charger, the Cellink U has full USB pass through to your phone so you can transfer data from your phone.  If that wasn’t everything, the Celllink U also has a micro SD/SDHC card slot and acts a card reader for your computer.

Pretty impressive huh!

Did I also mention that all this fits into a tiny black box measuring just 29mm(w) x 75mm(l) x 15mm(h).  It also comes with a silver plastic hard shell the unit fits inside to make it easier and safer to carry around in your backpack, briefcase or even your shirt pocket.

The one main issue I found with the device is that it’s great if you want to hook your phone up to a laptop that has ports on the side the same level as the surface your placing your phone on. The problem is that there is no flexibility in the ports on either end of the device so I could see them being easily bent or broken.  There is certainly no way you could use this on your desktop as the ports are up in the air and you’d need something to support the weight of your phone.  For this reason, the device loses a point in it’s overall score.

Besides this one flaw, the device is really pretty good.  It’s so small and light that you can hide it almost anywhere ready for emergency use at any time.  The device fits nice and snug inside it’s case so it’s well protected yet easy to get in and out.

Over all I would recommend this device as an excellent backup battery and emergency USB connector and it’s worth the $50 just to keep in the glove box of your car or in your office drawer.

The Cellink U is available from the USB Cell Drive Web Site for $49.95 and I couldn’t find it anywhere else with a quick search.
