Review: Sound ID 510 Bluetooth Headset

Who is Sound ID?

Sound ID was founded with the mission to bring personalized sound to mainstream consumers. Sound ID has accomplished this by combining deep knowledge of the human ear with cutting-edge Bluetooth technology and patented adaptive noise compensation techniques. The result is a new category of Bluetooth-compatible headsets – designed to revolutionize your personal appreciation of sound by addressing your unique hearing needs and your ever-changing acoustic environment.

Noted otologist and entrepreneur Dr. Rodney Perkins created Sound ID based on his understanding that hands-free mobile devices could be designed to mimic the ear’s own sound processing abilities. From there, he brought together top scientists and engineers in psychoacoustics, product design and software development to create a truly superior product line. Founded in 2000, the company is based in Palo Alto, California.

One of the coolest features of this Sound ID 510 Bluetooth headset is the free application which is available in the Android Market. As everyone has their own unique fingerprint, the Sound ID EarPrint application lets the user customize their Sound ID 510 headset to their liking with the right amount of bass, treble and volume. Another unique feature with this headset is the pass-thru feature which when not using your headset for calls, media etc… the device actually amplifies like a hearing aid reinforcing hearing with both ears offering the ultimate experience.

In the following review of this Sound ID 510 Bluetooth headset, we will look at the build quality, battery life and overall user experience offering all of you the closest look at a produce to help you decide if this product is right for you. We’ll first go over the product, the Sound ID 510 Bluetooth headset followed by a look at the Sound ID EarPrint application available for free via the Android Market.

Build Quality

Made up of mostly black plastic, the Sound ID 510 headset is solid and well designed. The folks over at Sound ID did a really good job crafting this little device. As you can see in the image below, the button layout is simple and is very easy to navigate blindly with just your fingers. The simple layout was designed not to confuse the user and we have deemed it a success.

On the face of the headset (letter D) acts as a touch pad to increase or decrease the volume of the headset itself. Many of the other headsets we have played around with is limited with volume controls and this is by far the best we’ve seen.

Battery Life

The Sound ID 510 headset features a lithium polymer battery capable of 5 hours talk-time with 135 hours stand-by time with approximately 2.5 hours of charge time. The unit we have ran 4 hours and 47 minutes of constant use. We took full advantage of this review unit and we never managed to put this headset down long enough to test the stand-by time and we’re sure if you pick this little guy up you’ll never even think to test the stand-by time. It took 2 hours and 34 minutes to fully charge from completely dead, so the numbers are relatively accurate.

Sound ID EarPrint application

One of the most notable features of this Sound ID 510 Bluetooth headset that clearly separates it from the competition is the EarPrint application that is compatible with the Sound ID 510 headset. Below we have provided a few screenshots giving you future Sound ID 510 headset buys a better look at what you’re getting.

This Sound ID 510 headset is fully customizable adding your own personal touch to the headset. We all have unique fingerprints and when it comes to hearing, we all prefer different settings. In the screenie to the above-left, you simply touch the screen and move it anywhere you’d like until you fine the perfect balance of bass and treble setting your own EarPrint. To the above-right you’ll find the sound level feature allowing you to adjust the headset accordingly.

When you arrive at the Tools feature, you have three options available.

  • In-call Status Indicator mode allows does exactly as it says and lights the LED light green while on a call visually informing people around you letting them know your using your headset for a current call.
  • The Noise Reduction feature is turned off, the person you are currently talking to will be able to hear your actual background noise and detect the change is speech clarity.
  • Pass Thru Mode is one of the highlights of this headset. When not on a call, you can turn on Pass Thru Mode and your hearing ability is enhanced much like a hearing aid that way your hearing is never weakened while the headset is in your ear. With Pass Thru Mode on, you have the choice of the “Focused” setting or the “Surround” setting.

If you have somehow misplaced your new Sound ID 510 headset the “Find My Headset” feature will appear, simply press the button and listen up as the headset makes a beeping noise to help you find it if you lost it in your car, office or in the couch.

With Bluetooth devices, it’s hard to keep up with your battery life and how much is left and you clearly don’t want to kick off a conference call or go through an important phone conversation with the interruption of your dead headset. With the Battery tab, you can see exactly just how much battery you have left remaining on your headset which definitely comes in handy.
