[RUMOUR] Could Samsung Be Preparing The Galaxy Folder, A Flip Phone?

galaxy folderThe words “flip phone” haven’t been used in the smartphone era for quite some time now, and with good reason; they generally elucidate an image of chunky, plastic phones that were cool many summers ago. there have been several variations on it since then, but none that could ever hold a flame to the smartphone form factor we know now. There is, however, a rumour that says that Samsung is planning a phone called the Galaxy Folder, unfortunately ruling that name out for Samsung’s new stationery products.

The Galaxy Folder would be an Android device running 4.2.2, incorporating decidedly pedestrian features such as a 1.2GHz Snapdragon S4, LTE and a numbered keypad. Yes, with buttons. There’s nothing specifically wrong with a flip phone in this day and age, however, going back to that form factor without innovating seems counter-productive in the grand scheme of things. But as always, if there is a market for it, it could well be worth it for Samsung.

Personally, I think NEC was onto something with the Medias W N-05 E with it’s dual-screens. It was a great idea that I think has gone by the wayside since NEC showed it off at MWC this year, or at least, not gone beyond Japan where it is being sold. If that was the direction a new Samsung flip phone was going in, I would be all for it. But if we have to go back to tactile buttons for dialling, that seems like a big step backwards.
