We have all seen those videos that feature Samsung’s OS baby, Tizen. It is very beta, and looks pretty awful. A lot of you out there (including myself) just laughed at the idea that Samsung would actually release a phone with this OS on it. Why would they ever pull away from Android? But what if Samsung always had plans to stir away from Android, and start releasing phones on their very own platform?
Samsung was third place just behind Nokia when they first broke out into the mobile world. As soon as they started rocking phones with Android, they have become and unstoppable force. Many people refer to TouchWiz as just an Android “skin”, but technically it is not a skin at all. It is just another version of Android loaded with more features. Yes, it is based off Android, but they have taken that Android base and built a monument mobile features that you will not find in stock Android. In the past couple years, how much has Samsung learned about Android? A lot. Now what is going to stop them from implementing that knowledge to their own OS?
“This is just sort of a safety net,” said Doh Hyun Woo, an analyst for Seoul-based Mirae Asset Securities. “But if Google dominates the market just like Microsoft did in the PC market with more than 90 percent share, it may prove the total opposite.” So in reality, Samsung is actually more worried about Google than Google should be worried about Samsung. Then you have Andy Rubin who recently said he was fearful of Samsung’s dominance in the mobile world, and how Google’s purchase of Motorola was THEIR safety net. This is all a bit peculiar that these mobile giants are taking these steps because they are fearful of one another. It is a crazy war game, and they both have their back up plans. Tizen is Samsung’s answer to Google’s dominance, Motorola is Google’s answer to Samsung’s dominance.
To me, I think Google should be more fearful of Samsung. When they unveiled the Galaxy S4 last Thursday, they did not even mention the name Android. It just showed up at the end of the presentation when they showed the official specs of the new phone. If Samsung decides to implement many of their TouchWiz features into Tizen, how would the public even know the difference? People are already referring to Samsung’s “Android” phones as “Galaxy” phones, which makes me sick to my stomach. And do you know how many people look at me with a questionable look when I ask them what version of Android they are running on their Galaxy S III? They do not know, nor do they care. They hear Jelly Bean and then get a hankering for a chewy snack. Let us know what you guys think about this.
