The Sony Xperia “Lens G” Camera Attachment revealed, not just for Sony Devices

When do smartphones become the standard digital camera? depends on who you ask and what you are trying to accomplish. Some professional photographers will easily tell you “Never”, other might say soon. No matter who you talk to though, it is all in the eye of the beholder. Just how much of a camera do you need to share photos on Facebook and G+? Just when I thought the 13 MP camera on the Xperia Z was awesome, Sony had to create something even bigger and better called the Lens G.

The Lens G is a clip on camera lens that gives your device a quick and easy 20 MP camera upgrade. The lens will have built-in Wi-Fi, NFC, Bionz processor and various sensors that do all the heavy lifting for you. Your phone will act as the viewfinder, perceivably via an app that connects to the accessory through Wi-Fi. Judging from the images, the attachment should just grip your device. (FYI, that is the Sony Honami i1 that guy is holding with the lens attached.)

According to Sony Alpha Rumors, the lens attachment model numbers are DSC-QX10 and DSC-QX100. The QX10 being the lesser in price. No dates are set, nor are any prices mentioned. We fully expect these to be shown off at the announcement of the Sony Honami i1 though.

Is there a market for higher end cameras and smartphones? Sure there is. A lot of it will come down to price and availability. With mention of them working on Android and iOS Sony is opening up their target market for an accessory. Would you pick one up and slap it on your HTC ONE or Galaxy S4 if it can do what it says it will?
