Do you know somebody with a debilitating smartphone addiction? Are they constantly on their phone fiddling with some app or social media? (If you can’t think of anyone, it’s probably you) Well, it looks like there may be a way for you to help ween them off smartphones with the NoPhone. In no way is the NoPhone a ‘phone’ in any sense of the word – there are absolutely no electronics inside – in fact, the only way that it even remotely resembles one is that it has the size and form factor of a phone so that it can be used as a “satirical security blanket”. In this way, people can still have something in their hand instead of feeling lost without their smartphone. Of course, it’s not meant to fight serious addition, much more a lighthearted way of making light of our society’s addiction to smartphones, but it has still garnered so much attention that the creators are now selling these ‘devices’ commercially.
$12 USD will get you the basic NoPhone and the package will even include an instruction manual (presumably also satirical in nature). If you want to make light of a friend’s selfie addition, NoPhone even has a selfie version of the NoPhone for $18 (pictured above) which simply affixes a mirror to the front face of the ‘device. It’s certainly a novel way of raising awareness of an issue that appears to be the norm now, and I can forsee many a Christmas intervention using this NoPhone as a catalyst.
