Verizon set to axe grandfathered unlimited plans this Summer

We all knew the next step in carrier evolution would be eliminating the old unlimited data plans entirely. We all figured that AT&T would be the first to pull the trigger, but Verizon seems to be starting the trend. You didn’t think you could sit comfortably on your grandfathered plan forever did you? Verizon Wireless CFO Fran Shammo announces in a conference call that customers who are still grandfathered and perform an upgrade to their line this summer and beyond, will be migrated to a tiered or shared plan. He mentions share plans due to the upcoming launch of the shared family data plans that are on the horizon.

While no specific date is mentioned, summer is pretty much here as far as we are concerned. I guess this means those of you that have been holding out for the Galaxy S III will be in trouble. The details of the whole switch should be announced or at least made public sometime soon. We aren’t sure if they have any way to enforce this new decision if you purchase at full cost in store, but I am sure they will try.

Looks like buying 3rd party devices might be more appealing to some people out there more now than ever. With Verizon taking the plunge on slowly killing the grandfathered plans, we wonder how long before AT&T announces a similar approach. It might be an interesting battle between carriers and consumers this summer.
