Want to take a ‘Field Trip’ somewhere fun and exciting? Google does, offers up new app for just That

Field Trips were the highlight of school. Being involved in a few various arts programs and T.A.G., I got to take some pretty great trips and meet some pretty great people. Of course I used it as a great way to get out of school, have limited supervision and meet cute girls. Still, the experiences lasted a life time. Google has recently launched a new app to the play store with the help of NianticLabs called ‘Field Trip.’ While you won’t have to sit for hours on end inside a hot, stinky yellow bus, this new app is sure to offer up a good trip.

In a nut shell, once Field Trip is installed it will just kick it on your device. Using your GPS location, it will alert you with cards of interesting information about the area around you. Basically making your entire normal routine an actual Field Trip every day. After you install the app and open it once, you won’t have to go do anything ever again. It offers up the usual little bits of information about the app and three settings for the notifications. You can set it to Explore, which offers up frequent notifications about things around you. Feeling Lucky, which offers up occasional notifications and Off…. Which means no notifications.

The app pulls data from highly regarded sources. For food and drinks, you get hits from Zagat, Thrillist, Food Network and Eater. Unique stores and products will be handled by Sunset, Cool Hunting, WeHeart, Inhabitat, and Remodelista. Toss in Atlas Obscura and Daily Secret to the mix for hidden gems for good measure. While they were at it, they also knew we loved our local music scene. Songkick and Flavorpill guide will help you out so you don’t walk by a show from your favorite local band and not know about it.

Seriously, this app is sounding better ad better the more we read about it. There is a lot more to this app that you will never have to touch. Like reading out loud things close to you while driving. Here, take a look at some highlights and a short video.

Highlights:

★ Discover thousands of interesting places/experiences that fall under the following categories: Architecture, Historic Places & Events, Lifestyle, Offers & Deals, Food Drinks & Fun, Movie Locations, Outdoor Art and Obscure Places of Interest around you.

★ Choose from three different modes to set frequency of Field Trip notifications. See “Field Trip” worthy places around you on a map, by tapping on cards in map view to pull up enthralling points of interest around you.

★ Go on a Field Trip while you drive. Field Trip can detect when you’re driving and automatically “talk” about interesting places and experience around you.

★ Capture the memory of a special place, by sharing a wondrous discovery through email and social networks such as Google+, Twitter and Facebook.

★ Wondering where the gem that you recently discovered is? Find your discovered field trip cards in the “recent’ section.

★ Field trip learns what you love. Thumbs up or down to tune the information discovery engine.

The app is built to work on Android 2.3 and up and weighs in pretty small at 2.9 MBs. Also note, it is optimized for smartphones, not tablets. We have a feeling the app will really shine in larger cities and places with historical value. I of course have nothing of interest near me. At least according to the sources they are using right now. Hopefully that expands a little. I will definitely keep it installed and crank up that notification alert to the max to see what shows up. I think it is going to be a lot of fun. It sure is smooth and clean.
