WhatsApp is an extremely popular app, with the Play Store listing between 500 thousand and 1 million installs. While it servers a major part in people’s lives, and offers a slew of features, it lacked one thing that many users desired, a web-based client. That is all about to change though as WhatsApp is now bringing the services to your PC, sort of.
In an announcement that they company made on their blog this morning, users will be able to login to a WhatsApp web-based client of sort. Although, it isn’t a website. Rather, it is an extension of your phone and mirrors your device conversations to your PC screen. It makes me think of AirDroid a bit. In order for it to all work, your device needs to be connected to the same connection that your PC is ie your home internet connection. You will need to head over to web.whatsapp.com and scan an onscreen QR Code through WhatsApp to make the connection.
Today, for the first time, millions of you will have the ability to use WhatsApp on your web browser. Our web client is simply an extension of your phone: the web browser mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device — this means all of your messages still live on your phone.
WhatsApp also makes mention that the service is not available for iOS users. However, looking above, you can see Android, Windows and Blackberry users are covered. Be sure to snag the latest version of the app from the Play Store as well, seems you will need it to access the additional settings to make it function.
