360 degree videos now supported on YouTube

The YouTube Creators blog page has announced that YouTube now supports 360 video on Android. This means that creators can shoot and upload videos that are done in a 360 degree field of view and users who watch the video can tilt, twist and turn their devices to see all the action. Think of it as Virtual Reality without the nee for head gear and a custom built app. Just spin around and see what is happening. Check it out for yourself.

You can get the effect on YouTube.com or in the embedded video above by using the small navigation bubble in the upper left hand corner or by clicking and holding on the video to change your angle of view. Here is another one to play about with.

and one more…

The set image is the same, but they are different videos I assure you. They have a total of 6 in the playlist to check out.

The Creator team has been working with Bublcam, Giroptic’s 360cam, IC Real Tech Allie, Kodak’s SP360 and RICOH THETA to make the whole thing super simple and all are compatible with YouTube. You will need to check out the technical information and run a specific script on the video file to insert the correct metadata before hand though.

I am hoping we all start to see some crazy interactive-ish sporting events, concerts and more soon. Could you imagine how much fun this will be for the YouTube for Kids app?
