Galaxy Nexus Smokes Windows Phone and gets the run around on Winning

Apparently there was a contest that was running that offered up anyone the chance to go head-to-head against a Windows Phone 7. The rules seemed pretty simple. Cold boot your device and display two various weather forecast for two different cities before the competing WP7. The prize package was pretty impressive, a Special Edition Laptop and a WP7. Skatter Tech’s Sahas Katta decided to take on the challenge using his Galaxy Nexus. He followed instructions to a ‘T’ and essentially ‘Smoked’ the WP7. What ensued after that was quite an experience.

I excitedly thought I won out of pure luck. However, I was quickly told that I lost. I asked for a reason and was told Windows Phone won because “it displays the weather right there.” That was rather unclear. I showed her my device which also was showing off the same information with two side-by-side weather widgets on the center home screen. After pressing for a better reason, I was told that Windows Phone won “just because.”

After trying to push for a real answer since I clearly won the contest by their rules, another Microsoft Store employee (possibly a manager) came by after noticing me asking more questions. Thinking on his feet, he quickly gave a ridiculous out-of-thin-air reason that I need to display the weather of different cities in different states and that “my phone could not do that”.

Out numbered and out gunned, Katta gave up trying to argue his point that he won the challenge. Not to mention all the excuses why he lost were pretty stupid. He had his picture taken in front of a sign that said , “My Android was smoked by Windows Phone.” If that would have been me, all hell would have broke loose and I would have probably been kicked out of the store and maybe even escorted out by security. Katta took the civil approach and just left. Don’t worry though, he ended up winning the prize package along with an apology via twitter.

So in the end, Android smoked a WP7 device and was rightfully crowned victorious. Silly Microsoft employees, trying to deny us.
