Update drops for Google Maps, offers re-designed Navigation Homescreen

Sometimes when I see updates hit my device I freak out. Literally, I have to grab my phone and see what the heck is new. Some times I am disappointed and other times I am pleasantly surprised. The latest Google Maps update that just landed was a pleasant surprise. It didn’t add anything extremely new or magnificent. It does add a new Navigation home screen layout that is a little bit nicer looking and incorporates the ICS style ‘tab’ navigation. On the left you now find your starred locations, in the center is the usual home screen and to the right is contacts. That is where all your contacts with address saved will appear.

The update also brought along one other new addition. You now have the ability to select which transit mode you want to look up directions for. Such as Subway, train or tram, or just search them all. I is a fairly nice little addition for those of you that rely heavily on public transit, and like new UI layouts to match your device. I am really surprised that the navigation aspect is still being labeled as a Beta though. It has always run really well for me and done everything I need it to.
