The richest carrier in the U.S. will soon follow Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile and start tacking on a $30 upgrade fee on new devices with a contract. Verizon is the last major carrier to start doing this. Sprint and AT&T already charge $36 per upgrade while T-Mobile’s is a mere $18.
Verizon says the fee “will help us continue to provide customers with the level of service and support they have come to expect which includes Wireless Workshops, online educational tools, and consultations with experts who provide advice and guidance on devices that are more sophisticated than ever.â€
No one likes to see another “fee” attached when they think they are getting a good deal on a new phone. The change is set to be hitting customers on April 22nd. I wonder if T-Mobile will adopt the new $30 upgrade price range? Pretty soon it is going to cost more in fees to upgrade than the new phone does, in some cases it already does. Nothing like getting 3 new free phones for $90 or more in fees.
