A week ago we heard the first suggestions that the Samsung Galaxy S6 won’t be using the Snapdragon 810 due to overheating issues that Samsung has been experiencing. Today, Bloomberg has also made the same claims, with its sources saying that overheating issues were found during testing and that Samsung isn’t willing to take a risk with what is probably its most important smartphone to date, the Galaxy S6. Instead, it will be powered by one of Samsung‘s own Exynos chips, which was the same suggestion made in the previous report.
While this news has been confirmed by neither Samsung nor Qualcomm, Qualcomm shares have taken a hit as Samsung is no doubt one of Qualcomm’s biggest customers. This probably suits Samsung just fine as it aims to ramp up its chip making facilities with a new factory in Seoul costing some $15 billion. Interestingly though, Bloomberg’s report, like a report from last week, is also confirming that Snapdragon 810 orders to LG and Xiaomi are still going ahead despite these known issues. We’ll just have to see who comes out better out of all of this.
