It has been about a year since Sony launched the
Xperia Play. You know, the Android device that slides open to a PlayStation controller instead of a QWERTY keyboard. Giving the user the chance to have some Android goodness, and legal play Playstation games that Sony provides. The idea and concept of such a device was radically new and different. For many, it is the best thing ever created, for others it is terrible. It definitely caters to a specific market of mobile gamers that don’t need to carry other gaming units to keep them selves occupied. The Play also prompted many great game developers to adopt the use of the controller in their games and optimize it.
Whats next? Well,
Sony can’t just drop off the earth without a follow-up device to the Play. They are pretty invested in the software for it already. It only makes sense to make a Play 2. According to source over at concept-phones, they have acquired an image of what the Play 2 is shaping up to look like. They also managed to get  the low down on potential specs for the device too. You can see the familiar Playstation controls under the slider and the all too common 4 capacitive touch keys at the bottom of the main screen. The screen is said to be 4.3-inches with a resolution of 1280 x 720. The source also states it has a 8.1MP camera, LED flash and 16X zoom. It is also supposed to be running the latest
Qualcomm S4Â processor at 1.5GHz.
Much of this could very well be true, but nothing official has surfaced about the device beyond rumors and inside sources. Anything is possible, now that Sony is its own entity after buying the Ericsson half. It would make sense for them to step up the game on a Playstation certified phone and bring it up to speed with the other super-phones floating around. We just can’t see Sony letting the Play die off when technology has advanced so far since its release. Â We doubt this will see the light of day at MWC, but we can be hopeful one is floating around Spain.
What do you guys think of a Play 2? If it were to have Android 4.0, and other required necessities, would you snag it the moment it dropped?
