In September JK Shin, head of Samsung Telecommunications, revealed that the Samsung Galaxy Tab wasn’t the only thing up their sleeves in the tablet space. In fact, he told thedroidguy when asked that there would be a whole portfolio of both 7″ and 10″ tablets and we would see a “Honeycomb” tablet.
Not long after the Samsung Galaxy Tab was revealed in the United States, reports that Samsung has started on their next tablet plans surfaced. The Samsung Galaxy Tab features Samsung’s own Hummingbird processor. It was rumored that Samsung would feature their own Orion processor in the next wave of tablets.
However, a new report by Citigroup analyst, Glen Yeung, suggests that Samsung is in the process of a major purchase of Nvidia Tegra 2 processors. Yeung Said Samsung has “placed a sizeable order with Nvidia for Tegra 2 chips in the first half of 2011, geared for both tablets and smartphones.” The order is expected to be between $250 and $350 million dollars (which is a lot of processors).
After Google’s VP of Engineering and Smartphone Pioneer, Andy Rubin, demonstrated a Motorola Android tablet with Honeycomb and a Tegra 2 processor earlier this month, Tegra 2 has been synonymous with Honeycomb. The Tegra 2 processor is said to render 3D graphics up to 5x faster than other processors currently available on the market.
