HTC EVO 4G OTA Rolling out Today with Lots of Goodies

Right now Sprint is rolling out an OTA (3.70.651.1) update for the HTC EVO 4G. Don’t get too excited, it’s not Gingerbread, sorry. It does however have a lot of new things included with it.

  • Blockbuster (including WM DRM 10)
  • Kindle eReader
  • Preloaded try/buy video game: NOVA from Gameloft
  • Sprint Zone update
  • Latest Telenav
  • Latest VVM App
  • Latest Sprint TV app
  • SWYPE Keyboard
  • Scan Now Widget for 4G (does not need to be available on any panel, just a widget option users could find and use).

Our friends over at Androidcentral have acquired the update.zip file for everyone through their forums. So if you are impatient and don’t want to wait for the OTA, feel free to follow the instructions provided below to do the update manually.

File: HTC EVO update

  • Rename the file to update
  • Move the file to your SD Card, be sure it is on the root directory (not in any folder)
  • Reboot your device into recovery mode. This is done by turning the phone off, then holding the VOLUME DOWN key and pressing the POWER key. If successful you will see Android guys on skateboards.
  • Now use the volume keys to highlight RECOVERY and press the power key to select it. Your device will now reboot into recovery mode. You will now see a phone with a red triangle if you did it correctly.
  • Now hold the VOLUME UP key and press the POWER key again and choose applysdcard:update.zip. It will begin the process of flashing the update to your phone for you. Once completed it should reboot on its own. If not you may need to select reboot system.

During the update process, make sure you have a fully charged battery and do not power the device off or pull the battery during installation. You could always run the risk of breaking your device so proceed with those instructions at your own risk.
