Xiaomi officially launches the Redmi 2 and MiPad in India

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer has officially announced two devices in India – the Redmi 2 and the Mi Pad – in India, following the huge success of the Redmi 1S.

The USP of Redmi 2 is that it is a dual-SIM smartphone, and both the SIM slots have an ability to latch on the 4G LTE networks. For India, the device supports both 4G LTE network – Band 3 (1800 MHz) and Band 40 (2300 MHz) – on both the slots. The 8GB variant of the smartphone is priced at INR 6,999 (~ $112), and the company has also revealed that it is set to launch a limited edition of the device, which features 16GB internal storage and 2GB RAM, later this month.

Other features include a 4.7-inch HD IPS LCD display with AGC Dragontrail Glass protection, Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset with 1GB RAM, an 8-megapixel rear-facing shooter with LED flash, and a 2-megapixel front-facing snapper. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth v4.0, USB OTG and a 2,200 mAh battery. Registrations to purchase the device will open today on Flipkart and the sale will commence on March 24. It competes with the likes of Motorola Moto E (2nd Gen), Lenovo A6000, Huawei Honor Holly, and Yu Yureka in the country.

Xiaomi MiPad

The company has also launched the MiPad tablet alongside the Redmi 2. The MiPad comes with an attractive price tag of INR 12,999 (~ $208) along with a 7.9-inch display with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 protection and a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels (312 ppi).

At its heart is an Nvidia Tegra K1 SoC with a quad-core Cortex-A15 CPU clocked at 2.2 GHz, 192-core Kepler GPU, and 2GB RAM.  The tablet comes with 16GB internal storage which can further be expanded up to a whooping 128GB via a microSD card. In the imaging department, it comes with an 8-megapixel rear and a 5-megapixel front shooter. The device is backed by a 6,700 mAh battery and runs Android 4.4 KitKat with MIUI v6 on top.

The tablet will go on sale starting March 24 and won’t require any registration on the customer’s part to buy the device unlike the Redmi 2.
