More Sites Banned from Google TV. There Is a fix!

More and more sites are being blocked from Google TV boxes preventing the whole experience from reaching its potential. We realize that there are revenue issues with the networks and something needs to change to make it beneficial for the networks to make money, but if it’s so much of a concern, why do they have access to their content at all via the web?

SyFy has just been added to growing list of sites blocking Google TV from streaming its content, which is no wonder as SyFy is owned by NBC, which is known to be one of the companies blocking content.

A company called PlayOn has a solution.  They already have software that takes content from the Web and streams through your desktop computer to any DLNA / UPNP media player in your house and they have now released support for Google TV.

Quoted from the PlayOn Site:

PlayOn is a software program that runs on your Windows PC, giving you access to a wide range of Internet content on your TV — Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, Amazon VOD, and many others.

I already have a copy of PlayOn running on my media server and streaming content from many Internet sites through to my Samsung Internet TV.  As soon as I get my hands on a Google TV system, I’ll be testing out this solution and let you know how it goes.

If you want more information about the PlayOn software you can head over to PlayOn.tv and sign up for the evaluation version of the software.  The evaluation version lasts for 14 days at which time you can purchase a license key for $39.99 for the first year and then $19.99 each subsequent year or you can purchase a onetime license valid for the life of the product for $79.99.

You can search their forums for information about the Google TV support currently being tested.
