Google takes YouTube to Outer Space, with a great opportunity for our youth Attached

YouTube is one of the coolest, simplest and quite possibly the best place to find random entertainment, educational videos and even some generalized crap. Any idiot can grab a camera, or their phone, and upload anything they want to the service for you to view. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a very useful an inexpensive media source. Sometimes Google, or other companies, take the service to a whole new level. That is exactly what they plan to do with the YouTube Space Lab project.

Google ha teamed up with Lenovo, Space Adventures, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to conduct the single greatest contest and experiment the world has ever been able to participate in. Interested students will have the opportunity to create a YouTube video explaining a science experiment that they would like to see conducted in space. Your video will be judged by a wide range of scientific experts, astronauts and even Professor Stephen Hawkings himself. That is pretty cool.

All entries will need to be in by December 7th of 2011 to be eligible. If you are chosen as a winner there are a few things that will happen. First of all your experiment will be carried out aboard the International Space Station and broadcast live over YouTube. The winners will also have various prizes available. Some of which make me extremely jealous. You could win a ZERO-G Flight, Lenovo IdeaPad laptops and your choice of a trip to Tanegashima Island, Japan, to watch your experiment blast off in a rocket bound for the ISS. If that doesn’t interest you in helping your kid win, then how about a once in a life time trip, when they turn 18, to Star City, Russia, for some good old fashioned cosmonaut training.

There is an age restriction though. You must be between 14 and 18 years of age at the time of your YouTube submission. Make sure your parents say it is cool to enter too.

You will definitely want to check that one out, you put your address in and a rocket will be launched from your house and you can watch as your location gets smaller and smaller. It is a lot of fun.

I wish my kids were a little older now, maybe I will call some of my friends and get them entered. Good luck, and please share this with everyone.
