28 new smartphones sporting Tegra 3 processors slated for 2012

We are sure you have seen a few fantastic looking games headed to Android over the last couple of months. You see the great gameplay, story line and graphics and think to yourself “I want THAT.” Then comes the news that it has been built and optimized for Tegra 3 powered devices. That is all fine well and good, but there are still a very limited number of Tegra 3 powered devices in the wild. Not for very long, at least according to NVIDIA.

In 2011 they launched the Tegra 2 processor in 15 different devices. It fared better in some devices than in others. With 2012 already well underway, some might think there isn’t a whole lot of time left to release a substantial number of devices. Not true. In fact NVIDIA has plans to put their chip in another 28 smartphones before the end of the year. That doesn’t even include tablets that will be announced.

Of course this news doesn’t mean a whole lot to the U.S. market currently. 18 of the 28 new smartphones will be headed to China and be under $300. That is thanks to there KAI chip that is much more cost effective to use, but still quad-core. That leaves 10 more devices to be distribute around the globe. If NVIDIA’s new Icera modem pans out well for AT&T, then we just might see some quad-core goodness hitting us too. It is still a bit early to know exactly what NVIDIA and their partners have up their sleeves, but we will surely keep our eyes peeled for what ever they have planned.
