Accessory Review – SuperTooth HD; The Ultimate Bluetooth Companion

First and foremost I want to let you guys know how much I cannot stand Bluetooth headsets. I am the guy that was just waiting to get a ticket for talking and texting while I drive. I am personally a firm believer that no matter how you use your phone, you are still distracted and it is the drivers fault, not the phones fault.

When I was asked to take a look at a the new SuperTooth HD and offer up my opinion and review, I was hesitant. After getting my hands on it and using for a few weeks, I don’t know how I managed with out it.

What is the SuperTooth HD: It is a 3.0 Bluetooth speaker car kit unit that connects to your device and turns into a complete personal assistant.

What makes it so great? Instead of providing just 1 mic, this little guy has 2 mics with DSP noise/echo canceling  technology. Audio is provided by 2 speakers running at 5 watts. The internal battery gives you 20 hours of talk time and 1000 hours of standby time.

All that sounds pretty good right? That barely scratches the surface of what the SuperTooth HD is capable of. Any car kit can let you talk to people on the phone. Lets add in some more features. The device (via the FREE market app) will announce a text message as it is received and then read it out loud for you. It will speak out your turn-by-turn navigation, read emails, Twitter feeds and Facebook feeds. With the HandsFree Assistant, you can dictate SMS, Emails, post to Twitter or to Facebook.

I tested that feature out quite a few times on my own and then checked my Twitter feed to see how it posted. It will transcribe your message as text and also include an audio attachment. That way if there was any question as to what you really said people can just listen to it.

We must not forget about the “voice command” features either.

Now we are getting somewhere. Lets keep going. Unlike many Bluetooth devices that will only allow you to pair one device at a time. With SuperTooth HD you can pair up to 2 devices at one time. This is great while traveling. You and your passenger can both be connected at the same time and use all the features. Ultimately though, this device can be paired up with 8 devices, but only monitor 2 at once. So this makes this more then just a one man show device. It can stay securely attached to the visor in the vehicle and anyone that is driving will pair automatically with it when in range and be up and running with ease.

Something that I found particularly nice is how it attaches to your visor. As you can see in the image below, on the rear of the unit are 2 very strong magnets. The visor clip is grooved on both sides so you can easily just “attach” the device. What makes this design element stand out to me was the additional abilities this provides. I have used this while cooking in the kitchen by simply “sticking” the unit to the hood above the stove. While working under the car, I stuck it to the exhaust pipe. That let me keep my phone inside the car, and still answer calls and texts. There is no limit to what you could do with this thing.

In the box you find the SuperTooth HD, a car charger with detachable USB cord, visor clip and instruction manual. As mentioned before the SMS application is free in the android market. If you purchase a SuperTooth HD, you are offered a 6 month free trial of the Handsfree assistant. If you wish to keep that function there is a fee associated with. The only reason that a month cost is required is due to the addition feature. When you are posting to Twitter or Facebook you are actually calling an automated service that SuperTooth provides. The device will still stream music, incoming SMS, phone calls and Navigation with out the addition fee.

I did have one issue. It is not the fault of the devices or the service. It is a fault in a computer reading back SMS/Twitter. It is something that all devices and systems have yet to get right yet. LOL, #thatsit, ROFL… All those wonderful little things we do in a text and on twitter come horrible when spoken instead of translated. I wouldn’t even know where to begin to solve this problem.

All in all I have had a wonderful experience with this device. The sound quality is superb, the battery life out does any amount of time I might be in the car in a week. I had zero trouble calling people and using the voice commands. I would very easily recommend this device to anyone that needs a car kit and doesn’t want a headset to worry about loosing.

For more information you can visit Supertooth.net. The device is moderately priced for its capabilities, at only $129.99. Compared to some of the $100 headsets I have seen, this is a better long term option in my opinion.
