AT&T Puts an Even Tighter Strangle on Data Use

We all saw the press release the other day from AT&T informing the public that throttling would begin to take place in October. It sounds like they are really going to start putting their foot down on unauthorized users. If you happen to be one of those luck few hoping to remain on your gransfathered unlimted data plan for $30 a month better be careful how you use it. If AT&T gets even a whiff of you using your device as a mobile HotSpots or tethering as a modem, your grandfathered days are numbered. You will be moved from your nearly ideal plan to the $45 2GB/month plan with an additional 2GB allocation for tethering. Seems as though they are ready to chop off the hand that feeds them as early as August 11th. So if you happen to use your device and data how you see fit, you better stop and use it how they tell you

They spoke about this in the beginning of the year by sending out letters to users that were violating the use of their devices and service with AT&T.

Earlier this year, we began sending letters, emails, and text messages to a small number of smartphone customers who use their devices for tethering but aren’t on our required tethering plan. Our goal here is fairness for all of our customers. (This impacts a only small percentage of our smartphone customer base.)

The letters outline three choices:

  1. Stop tethering and keep their current plan (including grandfathered unlimited plan)
  2. Proactively call AT&T or visit our stores and move to the required tethering plan
  3. Do nothing and we’ll go ahead and add the tethering plan on their behalf — after the dated noted in their customer notification
