EPSON’s Moverio BT-100 Android powered glasses with 3D playback and Dolby Sound start to Ship

Are you confused yet? If we hadn’t seen them we wouldn’t believe them. Of all the manufacturers in the world, EPSON steps up to the plate with the worlds first wearable Android powered glasses. Yes, glasses. You slip these puppies on your head and you are staring through to a whole new world of Android and entertainment. The glasses will simulate an 80-inch screen right before your eyes.

The Moverio BT-100 is quite possibly the coolest Android gadget we have ever seen. The unit consists of the glasses that have ear buds attached to provide you Dolby Digital audio. Attached to the glasses is a pocket-sized control unit. The control unit has a touch sensitive trackpad for navigating around the OS through the glasses. You also have a home, menu and back button just below that. There is also a five way directional pad along with brightness control and a button to toggle between 2D and 3D mode. Yes, you can toggle if you want to be playing Angry Birds or watching a movie in 3D or not.

The Moverio’s are powered by Android 2.2 and gives you all the usual aspects of Android we know and love. They offer 1 GB of internal storage but EPSON ships them with a 4GB microSD card for more media storage. The SD slot will accept up to a 32GB card too. The BT-100’s have built-in Wi-Fi so you can browse the web. Flash Player 11 pre-installed for watching your favorite flash content. EPSON puts the BT-100’s battery life at lasting 6 hours of continued use. Rather than ramble on about the new high-tech head-gear, check out the list of awesomeness these sport –

Where I think EPSON has gone above and beyond the glasses themselves is the support and tools they are making available for developers. Giving our talent devs everything they need to create some crazy new applications will be a serious perk.

While they might not be a Tegra 3 toting mega powerhouse on Ice Cream Sandwich, I would still love to have a set. Imagine laying in bed and watching a movie and not upsetting the wife. Strap them on during a long flight or even those annoying car trips. When new technology like this hits the market, my first thought is, “How Much?” Will I ever be able to afford a set for myself? Just the brief outline of what they do and the excitement I heard from Tony when he saw them in person, I figured they would be way out of my price range. Surprisingly enough, they aren’t going to run you $1500. Not even $1000. You can pre-order your very own Moverio BT-100’s for $699.99. That is pretty close to the cost of an unlocked Android device at full price. We all know you guys buy those all the time. I was extremely surprised how affordable they were.
