Hacked Play Store enables Gift Cards and Wishlists

There isn’t much big news running around the web today other than the new Google gift cards for the Play Store. We have seen images of what it looks like on a device, we see landing pages up from Google and we even have cards for sale at a few local retailers. What we don’t see yet though is Google updating the Play Store to enable the features. At least not yet. With cards already on sale and fully purchasable at Target, they better be quick to flip that switch.

If you are a little bit impatient, like us, then you really want to see the new additions in action for your self. Even if you have no plans to get a gift card or receive one anytime soon. Personally I am a bit more excited about the wishlists than the gift cards. As usual, there is a solution for you to check out the new features thanks to the help of some fantastic work by an XDA developer named webDeWo. He has taken the latest 3.8.16 build and enabled both features for you guys to have a look at. The wishlist aspect should work across the globe, but the gift card section is strictly U.S. based for now. Installation isn’t just a simple push of the button though. You will need to uninstall current updates and then remove Phonesky.apk or if on 4.1, com.android.vending-*.apk using a root explorer app. webDeWo offers up simple instructions on how to do it.

Of course we don’t recommend installing this version unless you make a backup of your current Play Store first. This modified Play Store will kick the features in gear for you, but does disable the stock built-in updater for the original Play Store. It is up to you. We should be seeing the official app update rolling out very soon anyways. If you are impatient and like messing around with things though, head over to webDeWo’s XDA thread for install information and the link to the file needed. Good luck, and enjoy.
