Is LG going to make the next Nexus smartphone? Visits from Google engineers point to “Yes”

The Nexus 6 has barely been out for 6 months and rumours are already swirling around who is going to manufacturer Google’s next Nexus smartphone. While Huawei appeared to be the leader in the early going, attention has shifted to LG, who allegedly had Google engineers visit their headquarters and factories in Korea this month. This begs the blatantly obvious question: Is LG going to make the next Nexus smartphone?

Of course, LG has already released two very good Nexus smartphones in the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, which was followed by the equally good Nexus 6 made by Motorola. It’s not clear why Google would go to LG again for its smartphone, apart from previous success, as we’ve often see manufacturers get multiple chances to make a particular form factor device and going back to LG this year would effectively leave Motorola out in the rain. But with Google revisiting HTC for the Nexus 9 after a long relationship hiatus following the Nexus One, it’s clear that Google is very open to returning to former manufacturers, and it seems it could be happening again this year.
