Ouya benchmarked, gets beaten by quite a few Smartphones

Ouya

Ouya (pronounced “Ooo yah!”) was lucky enough to become one of the fairytale darlings that have graced Kickstarter in the growing flurry of crowdfunded projects, but has faced considerable criticism in recent months as it fulfills its orders to Kickstarter backers and gears up for full-scale retail production.

Reviews for the Kickstarter version of the Ouya were less than sterling and while Ouya has responded that the early versions of Ouya are not suitable for review, whether this means the full launch version will be magnitudes better (and Kickstarter backers expecting the release version have been a little shafted) remains to be seen.

FutureMark has added fuel to the fire this week after its 3DMark benchmark of the Ouya showed that it stacked up pretty ordinarily against the current generation of smartphones; in fact it is currently 78th on the list behind the likes of the Nexus 4, Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X+.

You might argue the fact that it costs $99 is a huge plus in its favour, there is no question that the Tegra 3 chipset, in this version Ouya at least, is starting to look a bit dated.

Are you getting an Ouya, and does this latest benchmark concern you? James Coote has put together a video showing an Ouya being put through its paces, see it below.
