Support for animated emoji may soon be added to WhatsApp.

  • WhatsApp has always provided users with a variety of ways to express themselves, such as emoji, GIFs, stickers, and reactions. The messaging platform, owned by Meta, constantly adds new emoji characters, ensuring that users can always find the right emoji to convey their emotions. Additionally, users can create their own personalized WhatsApp emoji stickers. However, WhatsApp is now working on introducing animated emoji to the platform, enabling users to express themselves in an even more engaging way.
  • According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has been working on animated emoji since June 2022, with the latest beta release of its desktop app featuring a beating heart emoji reaction. The animated emojis are created using Lottie, an animation file format that’s optimized for mobile devices and conserves space. WhatsApp has over a billion users globally, and the introduction of new features must not compromise app performance, particularly on low-end devices.
  • At present, there is no option to disable emoji animations on WhatsApp, and it is unclear whether the company intends to provide this feature. In contrast, WhatsApp’s rival, Telegram, has an extensive range of expressive features, including animated emoji and reactions, as well as the ability to convert any video into stickers. Premium subscribers to Telegram can access exclusive animated stickers and reactions.
  • When animated emoji become available on WhatsApp, they will likely be available on the platform’s mobile apps. However, this feature is still being tested, and it may take some time before it is available on the stable channel.
