The Samsung Gear A will allegedly be Samsung’s round smartwatch, have 3G and call capabilities

We’ve been hearing about a round Samsung smartwatch for what seems like an eternity, and most recently, a round smartwatch was allegedly going to be announced at MWC 2015. Of course, that never eventuated, but SamMobile apparently has the scoop which says that Samsung is still working on a round smartwatch, and that it will hit the market as the Samsung Gear A. We may never know if this is the same round smartwatch from the design patents we’ve seen before for an “Orbis” device, but the Gear A does sound a lot like it from all the details that have dropped.

The Gear A will allegedly be available in two variants, one with standard Bluetooth connectivity and the other with 3G and calling capabilities. This latter variant is similar to Samsung’s previous effort with the Gear S, but the Gear S was unable to make calls and didn’t really have an equivalent device apart from the much less glamorous Samsung Gear Live. We’re guessing that the Gear A will also be running Tizen as opposed to the Android Wear operating system. A series of model numbers have been leaked as well, including American network versions, which suggests the device will be available in quite a few places:

  • SM-R720
  • SM-R730
  • SM-R730A (AT&T)
  • SM-R730P (Sprint)
  • SM-R730V (Verizon)
  • SM-R730T (T-Mobile)
  • SM-R730S
  • SM-R732S
  • SM-R732K
  • SM-R732L

No doubt the timing of the Gear A is to compete with the Apple Watch, so we’ll have to see if Samsung makes a splash this time around with its smartwatch offerings like it did with its flagship device this year.
