There’s an app for that?

While perusing the newest additions to the Android Market for the weekly roundup, I came across an interesting app that just couldn’t wait. Meet the Best Buy Movie Mode app. You start the app when the movie, in this case Despicable Me, starts, and at the end it acts as a translator during the credits. In addition, there is the promise of “even more exclusive content after the show”. That’s about all the app does.

While this is definitely an interesting mashup of new media and advertisement, I don’t see any long-term benefit to this app. After all, it’s only good while watching the movie in a theatre and who goes more than once? Of course, one of the bonus content features could be a coupon code that unlocks once the movie is out on disc, which would promote keeping the app around.  Anything is possible, even the idea the app was never intended to be something more than a one-day download.

It will be interesting to see if Best Buy follows up with other movies or if similar promotional apps start showing up. If you were planning to see Despicable Me or want to read more about this app, go HERE.
