Word Lens finally hits Android, instant on screen language Translation

Way back in January we saw an app called Word Lens. It has been around for iOS for quite some time, but hadn’t made its way to Android yet. Well, that all changed just last week as Word Lens finally made its official debut on the Play Store.

So what is Word Lens you ask? Well it is an augmented reality app that translates various languages of written text on your device’s screen to your language using the camera. This becomes extremely helpful when traveling in other country’s where the native language isn’t your own. Open the app and point it at signs, menus, newspapers or what ever you might need to understand. It is best explained by the super cool little promo video that they released a while ago, check it out.

Pretty cool isn’t it. The app is on the Play Store and has two formats available. There is a free demo version that shows you how the word reverse and word erase functions work. It really isn’t all that amazing and is kind of annoying. Then you have the paid version which has been released at an introductory price of $4.99 which comes with one language pack. You can purchase additional packs for English ⇆ Spanish , English ⇆ French and English ⇆ Italian. Each additional pack is $4.99.

This is still the first release of the app to Android, so you can expect some hick-ups and issues. Especially since we have such a wide variety of devices and OS versions floating around. Quest Visual, Inc. lists the app as compatible with Android 2.3.3 and up.

We checked out the Demo version of the app, but it seems a little worthless as far as showing you its true potential. If you have the need for this you might just want to snag the full app and your language pack of your choosing. We are certain it will get better over time as the technology in the app improves.
