Angry Birds sees 6.5 million downloads Xmas day and new Chinese New Years update to Season’s coming Soon

You get some Rovio! Apparently Angry Birds isn’t as done as many would have thought. Rovio is reporting that it received 6.5 million downloads of the angry little buggers on Christmas day.  That is almost the total number of smartphones that were reportedly activated over the holiday. Those are some pretty impressive numbers from both sides of the coin. The 6.5 million downloads were a total of all three versions of the game that are currently available, the original, Season’s and Rio and was a mix of free and paid versions from various OS’s. Compared to last years downloads of 2 million, this is a huge win for Rovio.

“We’re really excited to have such a massive number of new people get acquainted with Angry Birds over the holidays — we have exciting new releases lined up for 2012, and can’t wait to introduce them to the public,” said Rovio’s Ville Heijari.

Along with the record number of downloads, Rovio made known that there is a new addition to the saga that is still sweeping the nation. There will be a new update waiting for you in the market soon for the Season’s build. No official name has been set yet for it and it isn’t out right this minute. The update will be in celebration of the Chinese New year and will be heavily Chinese themed. It is slated to hit this month, but when is still a mystery.

We will keep our eyes open for the update and let you know when it goes live though.
