App Review: Guerrilla Bob [Video]

With all these ports of iOS games onto Android it’s a pity that so few feature cross platform multiplayer so we can show our iDevice brethren who’s king.
The setup for Guerrilla Bob is a ridiculous story of Bob and his school friend John who grew up on either side of the law and now you have to hunt him down. I’m simplifying the story here a little, but only a barely, all you really need to know is: Run to the north, shoot dudes. The game is controlled like a dual joystick shooter, the left hand of the screen moves your character while the right hand side of the screen uses auto aim and will fire directly at a (seemingly random) target.
Variety isn’t a strong suit of Guerrilla Bob, with only seven levels to play through and very little variety between them, it can feel that you’re playing through the same level over and over with only a section or two changed and different types of enemies to fight. The levels generally restrict you to just going north up the screen and any deviation is short and rewarded by some points or a new weapon or upgrade. There is a fair mix of weapons to find, or purchase if you’re in the mercenary mode, and these weapons can also be upgraded. There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of balance between these weapons however, the standard machine gun does a great deal of damage already across a long range and when you find the slow firing rocket launcher with little splash damage or the short ranged flamethrower you might well find yourself sticking with the same gun you began the game with for the majority of the situations.
By far the best feature of Guerrilla Bob is the co-op. Sadly it is local Wi-Fi only but you can team up with iOS devices as well as players on a Mac and eventually PC. The co-op is quick and easy to get into and you can also load up existing saves for any of the game modes and continue unlocking weapons or improving on you ranking for a level. Working together with a partner makes the game considerably easier and even going through on the hard setting doesn’t offer a great deal of challenge and should one player get downed he can be revived by the other as long as the fire isn’t too heavy. Working together to flank an enemy boss or to have one player reduce the enemies numbers while another destroys their buildings is a lot of fun and if feels like playing cooperatively is absolutely the way to get the most fun out of Guerrilla Bob.
There’s a lot to enjoy in Guerrilla Bob, although its lack of variety hinders it somewhat, its issues are offset by the enjoyable multiplayer experience, sharp visual style and great core gameplay.
