HTC finally entering the smartwatch space with supposed announcement on March 1st along side One M9

While most major manufacturers have put out at least one smartwatch in the last year, there is still one player that many of us are waiting on; HTC. There were a number of rumors about a watch in the works, but they never amounted to much. The lat major press event from HTC was the Double Exposure event where the HTC Desire Eye and Re Camera were announced. Many speculated they would make a watch announcement at that time, although the event title didn’t give me any indication of it. A new report coming out of Bloomberg points to the Taiwanese company finally taking the plunge come March first during their press event in Barcelona Spain for Mobile World Congress.

The report is rather lack in any details though only mentioning that the smartwatch will link with Under Armour’s fitness service. That would be good UA considering the product line-up that currently exists is limited to the Jawbone UP24 and a few offerings from Magellan. Since HTC announced a partnership with UA earlier this month I can’t say it is all that surprising. The question will be more about looks and what it will run. Back when Google announced Android Wear HTC was an announced partner along side Samsung, Asus, Motorola and LG. With the later already putting out at least one Android Wear device it is safe to assume March 1st should bring about the first HTC Android Wear device finally nearly a year after it was announced. However, the Under Armour news might lead to something totally different entirely.

The report also talks about the next flagship from HTC, which has been sporting a code name of the HTC Hima. We have all surmised that it will be the HTC One M9. The M9 is rumored with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, 3GB or RAM, 5-inch 1080p display and a 2,840 mAh battery pushing Android 5.0 with Sense 7. It is also supposed to pack in a 20 MP rear camera and move the questionable UltraPixel camera to the front. The source seemingly confirms that it will resemble last years size and design and be offered in gold, gray and silver and we can expect Dolby 5.1 audio included as well. So the stories go anyways.

HTC MWC 2015

The one thing we know for sure is that HTC is going to be announcing a phone at MWC. It is very likely, and needed, that they announce a wearable of some sorts. The invites that were sent out already point to “Utopia in Progress” and a tweet from HTC’s Senior Global Online Communications Manager, Jeff Gordon, stated that the product line-up for 2015 will “will be our best ever–with some huge surprises that will blow you away. 😉” HTC certainly needs to pull things together and get going this year. They ended 2014 with Q4 being their first profitable quarter since 2011. I attribute that to the Nexus 9, while I am sure the Re Camera and Desire Eye helped out some.

What do you want to see in a wearable from HTC and does a spec bump in every department but the screen make sense for the 2015 HTC One M9 flagship?
