The original iPhone was announced eight years ago today, something everyone should be thankful for

History was made when the original iPhone was announced eight years ago. When Steve Jobs took the stage in his patented garb that fateful day in 2007 to announce the iPhone, he couldn’t have known the effect it would have on the smartphone market, spawning a battle between iOS and Android that has yet to see a conclusive victory, and probably won’t for the foreseeable future. Check out that keynote speech in the video below:

The tagline for that iPhone was that “Apple reinvents the phone”, combining three tenets of multimedia consumption – music, phones, and internet connection – and with a focus on ease-of-use to create a device that all of us now essentially take for granted and expect with each new generation of devices. That iPhone, despite its critics, was the blueprint for the device that you now have in your pocket (unless you still have a feature phone, I guess), and without it, smartphone technology might not even have made it to where we are at now.

So whichever side of the fence you sit on: remember that eight years ago, a common event changed the course of technology history forever. And we should all be thankful for it.
