Plex discontinues Plex Pass app and consolidates into Plex for Android

Plex pushed out an update or sorts to both the Plex for Plex Pass on Android as well as Plex for Android. The Plex for Plex Pass app was the free app that gave Plex Pass subscribers early access to upcoming features and changes to the app prior to the users of the traditional app. It was a good way for those that pay for a monthly,. yearly or lifetime account to see some additional perks. Today Plex has pushed some news to the Play Store apps  with some changes that you need to know about. First of all, the Plex Pass app will no longer be maintained. Meaning there will be no more updates,  features, bug fixes or changes to the app going forward. Users are directed to picked up the more traditional Plex for Android app. Before you go bonkers and throw your phone and request cancellation of you subscriptions, the Plex for Android app has now become free with in-app purchases.

The free version of the app gives you the following:

• Unlimited casting of photos and videos from the Camera Roll on your phone or tablet to Plex apps on Roku, Chromecast, Android TV, Fire TV, and Plex Home Theater (coming soon to Xbox One, Playstation, and other apps).
• Unlimited casting of any media on your Plex Media Server (free download available at https://plex.tv/downloads) to other Plex Apps.
• Remote control your big screen Plex Apps.
• LIMITATION: Playing media from your Plex Media Server on the device running this app is limited (one minute for music and video, watermark on photos) until the app is unlocked.

The paid version unlocks the limits and removes the watermark for a small one-time in-app purchase, which is still $4.99. No, this doesn’t mean that if you already have a Plex Pass subscription, or previously paid for the app, that you need to pay again. Rather, when you sign in the app should recognize your previous purchase and unlock all the unlimited streaming abilities and/or give you the additional Plex Pass features. That doesn’t mean there won’t be some issues with some accounts. If it seems to not being activating that you already paid then you will need to hit the “Already Paid?” button on the activation screen and follow the instructions to restore your purchase.

In the end this will give potential users access to the app prior to having to shell out some cash to see if it is even something they want. Previously you had no choice but to buy the app to even give it a shot. With its limited ability for free, would be users will quickly see its potential. Hopefully it generates more sales and Plex Pass subscriptions for the company, where you get trailers & extra, Xbox & Playstation support, camera upload, Plex Home and others.
