The Barnes & Nobles Nook Color is the center of attention for an Ice Cream Sandwich project that is already underway, by developers Dalingren and Fattire; however, unlike many of the other ICS developments we’ve reported on, there’s unfortunately no public link to offer yet. As you can see from the photo, the $199 e-reader-turned-Android-tablet has successfully managed to boot the latest flavor of Google’s highly popular OS, though a handful of things are going to need some tuning up before this is ready for the masses.
On the plus side, WiFi works, Bluetooth works, and overclocking works. You can install the Android Market and other Google Apps. Areas still in need of some attention are sound, video and hardware acceleration.
I chuckled when I saw this article, as earlier this week I traded my Nook for an HP Mini Netbook — though, I still think I got the better end of the deal, it would have been nice to see ICS run on it once before we parted ways. While I’m sure there’s somebody somewhere working on one, I’ve yet to hear anything about an Ice Cream Sandwich port for my Viewsonic GTablet. But, at the rate that thing runs Honeycomb, I’d be surprised if it never gets its own taste of Android 4.0. I guess I’ll just have to have patience, and keep on stalking the ROM threads til I get some good news on that front.
The Nook Color features a 7-inch, 1024 x 600 pixel IPS display, an 800 MHz processor and 8GB of storage. If you’re not looking for something as powerful as the ASUS Transformer Prime, this is still a wonderful option. Especially with the news that it will most likely see ICS in the near future.
